Asshole of the Day, September 27, 2013: Bill O’Reilly
Just as Fox News and Republicans are quick to compare their opponents to Hitler or Stanlin, which then becomes PROOF of evil, they also love to claim that something was believed by the Founding Fathers or Jesus as proof that the GOP is right.
It’s all quite incredible what they will claim, putting words and thoughts in the mouths of people who haven’t spoken in hundreds or thousands of years. But since they believe they are right now, they must elevate what they believe by attributing it to someone they assume everyone reveres. All in all, it’s quite disrespectful to put your words in a beloved historical figure’s mouth.
And so it is that Fox News host Bill O’Reilly has a new book, Killing Jesus, in which he claims Jesus died to protest taxes. Really:The basic argument of the book is that Jesus died because he interfered with the taxation-heavy Roman revenue stream. The reason the Jews eagerly anticipated the Messiah, writes O’Reilly, is, “When that moment arrives, Rome will be defeated and their lives will be free of taxation and want.”
Taxes? Oh, come on, Bill, it’s bad enough that conservatives try to claim Jesus hated gays as much as they did, despite the fact that Jesus never said ANYTHING about gays though He said plenty about the importance of treating society’s outcasts with respect, but Taxes? Oh, please.
Asshole of the Day, September 23, 2013: Kevin Cramer
When the House GOP voted to kick 3.8 million people off food stamps on Thursday, even they knew that it would look cruel. So over the next few days they have claimed a variety of excuses that make it sound better than it is.
Rep. Kevin Cramer tried to hide his cruelty behind the Bible, saying, “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”
And with that, no doubt, Rep. Cramer expects the issue to be closed BECAUSE THE BIBLE SAYS SO. But the Bible still has no problem with slavery, but we do, so if you’re going to justify making poor people starve, you’ll need more than that.
And more than that, it’s just picking and choosing the parts of the Bible that support your cruelty while ignoring the parts that don’t. Because, as one constituent pointed out to him, JESUS seems to be strongly on the side of feeding those who can’t feed themselves.
So you see, Rep. Cramer, quoting the Bible doesn’t make you any less of an asshole. In fact, in this case it makes you Asshole of the Day.
It is Rep. Cramer’s second win, the first being for claiming that abortions caused school shootings.
